Highly successful social media managers have habits and traits that contribute to their effectiveness in the field.
They have invested so heavily in their skills and in their knowledge that they are able to produce profound results for the people they work for.
But here’s one thing that baffles me, it’s the fact that many business owners would give out their business’ social media management jobs to just about anybody.
Some give it to their nieces, some give it to their nephews, and yet others give it to any random teenager in their Church.
If you want to get results with your business’ social media platforms, you need to give it out to people who can help you get results.
Successful social media managers are those who have invested heavily in their skills, taken a number of courses, and worked in that field for a long time.
They develop habits that help them stay ahead of trends, engage with their audience, and create compelling content.
If you are looking for a social media manager who’ll help drive results for your business or if you’re a social media manager who’s looking to do this for your clients, then continue reading this blog post.
Here’s a video of the same topic on YouTube.
Habit 1: They Stay Updated
Successful social media managers stay up-to-date with the latest trends, algorithms, and changes of the diverse social media platforms there are.
They subscribe to industry newsletters, they attend webinars, and they follow industry news all to ensure that they are informed about what is happening in the digital space.
They invest heavily in their craft by setting a budget for their personal and professional development.
It doesn’t matter whether they are freelancers or they work a 9-5, their self-development budget is the largest spend they have.
In fact, from the things they share on their social media pages, you can easily detect that they are thought leaders in the industry.
The truth is that there is no social media platform that is too difficult for them to handle.
If you want to become a successful social media manager, you need to begin to develop your skills and increase your knowledge of the field.
Go above and beyond to get results for your clients. Take online courses, try your hands on new trends, and practice a lot.
2. They Have Niches

If you want to be a successful social media manager, you need to have a niche.
I don’t advice my students to take up every job that comes their way. It is important to niche down.
for example, you can decide that you’ll only work in the food industry or in the fashion industry.
Or you can decide to only manage businesses in the tech space or to manage personal brands of thought leaders.
But whatever you decide, you must stick with it.
When you niche down, you are able to get a good knowledge and experience of that field and you get desired results.
Any successful social media manager that you see today are exceptionally good in just a few niches.
Some of my favourite niches are the food and fashion niches. I also love to manage Church social media platforms too.
When you are choosing more than a niche or an industry, make sure that you choose the ones that are closely related.
For example, fashion, food, lifestyle seem to be almost similar, so you can go for them.
The reason for this is so that you don’t spread yourself too thin and you can actually deliver desired results to your clients.
3. They Listen to Their Clients

Successful social media managers pay attention to what their clients, consumers, and audience want.
They then take that information and use it to create mind-blowing content that will be appealing and receptive to the audience or the customers.
There’s no point doing all of the work you do as a social media manager if you do not listen to your clients or to the audience.
Instead, you’ll be spending so much time and effort doing what doesn’t resonate with them.
For some of the social media platforms that I manage, I do a strategy call first with my clients before we get to work.
Once they approve of the strategy, I then create content and still wait for their approval on the content before sharing.
You have to make sure that you are creating a detailed social media strategy that aligns with your client’s goal.
This includes creating content calendars, posting schedules, and specific objectives for each of the platforms they use.
You also have to take note of what works and what doesn’t, what gets engagement and what gets ignored.
4. They Do a Lot of Research

A good social media manager does a lot of research.
First, they research their audience by investing time in analyzing the demographics, interests, and behaviour in order to create content that will resonate with them.
A good audience research is something called an ideal client avatar which will answer questions like who the audience is, what they do, where they are, what their goals and challenges are, and so on.
Social media managers are the bridge between what the audience want or need and how they can get it.
Successful social media managers also do platform research.
They find out how each platform will work for them and for the brands that they manage so that they can fully maximize it.
Because they know that each platform caters to different demographics and different industry, they try to focus on just a few ones that will benefit them most.
5. They Are Good Content Creators
Content creation is one of the major skills that help social media managers grow to the point where they can charge whatever they want.
They understand the need to create high-quality, relevant, and visually appealing content.
This includes images, videos, infographics, written content, and so on. They understand how to write good copies and they know the copies that drive results.
In order to keep their audience glued, they maintain a regular posting schedule and this helps them to gain favour from the algorithm.
They understand that authenticity builds trust and it fosters a strong connection with their audience and so they maintain an authentic and genuine online presence.
They also understand that what works on one platform or in one industry might not work on another.
6. They Practice Self-Care
Successful social media managers prioritize self-care in order to avoid burnout.
They understand that a good state of mind is very crucial to doing their jobs properly, so they take out time to rest and refresh.
Another thing they understand are ethical practices.
They adhere to ethical and responsible practices on social media, ensuring that their content is respectful and compliant with platform guidelines.
7. They Engage with Their Audience
Successful social media managers build meaningful relationships with their audience.
They use meaningful engagement to convert audience to paying customers because they know that without customers, their business won’t survive.
Successful social media managers also share great content with them and comment on their opinions.
Ultimately letting them now that they are important.
They actively engage with their audience by responding to comments, messages, and feedback. This engagement helps build a loyal and active community.
